I went to Ecosimplista to learn about eco-friendly and sustainable building. We learned that the simplest thing you can do to improve your air quality is to stop using conventional and toxic cleaning products. Instead, use vinegar and essential oils. Other toxins in the house can be caught up in carpet, air ducts and even the items used to decorate your house, such as paint. The chemical that is most dangerous in the house is formaldehyde, which is found in flooring, paint and other building products. It’s really important to use eco-friendly products when remodeling. It can be expensive to replace everything, so make small changes, which can lead to big changes. When you are replacing flooring, choose sustainable flooring. Websites like craigslist.com and freecycle.com allow users to pick up items that are local to them without any cost and trade items with their neighbors. For the creative among us, and those who don’t mind a little work and cleaning, reusing local free furniture is a low cost and eco friendly option.
New Green Furniture
New green furniture can be identified by a similar checklist. Is the material low impact? Is the processing and travel low impact?
New green eco friendly furniture can be identified in the following ways:
1. The supplier provides organic cloth or fabric in the furniture. Examples include an organic mattress pad or organic crib mattress.
2. The supplier uses natural dyes in the place of harsh chemicals.
3. The supplier uses recycled or refurbished material to create the furniture. Examples would be suppliers who make beautiful modern counter-tops from recycled glass. Those who locate discarded wood to make new wood furniture are great examples as well.
4. The supplier uses plant materials that have a faster re-growth rate than conventional options. Examples would be suppliers who use bamboo in the place of freshly sourced wood.
5. As a general rule, the more natural the used material, the more green the furniture. Exceptions include when a natural resource is scarce and overly used in conventional markets. For these furniture building materials, the greener alternative is the recycled form of this material or the use of a separate material that is healthy and low impact.
